Enrollment in Medicaid for as many as 50,000 newly eligible residents opens tomorrow, with health benefits slated to start August 15th.

Governor Maggie Hassan held a kick-off event on Monday at the Manchester Community Health Center, where she called the bi-partisan deal to expand the state’s Medicaid program the most significant health care legislation in decades.

“People who struggle to make ends meet and put food on the table while earning less than $16,000 a year, they count,” says Hassan. “And now, they won’t have to face the impossible choice of paying for care or paying for rent, of purchasing a prescription or feeding their families.”

New coverage for residents is dependent on income. People can apply online at nheasy.nh.gov or healthcare.gov, by phone at 1-800-901-4999 or in-person at certain state offices.

“We will be doing our utmost to make sure that this process is as quick and as efficient as possible for the people of New Hampshire,” says Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Nick Toumpas.

Through so-called Obamacare, the federal government picks up 100% of the costs through 2016, when New Hampshire lawmakers will need to decide on renewing or revising the program.
