State Awaits Approval Of Medicaid Expansion Plan

The state is bumping up against an intended start date for Medicaid expansion sign-ups.

The bi-partisan plan agreed to earlier this year originally called for a two-month early enrollment period beginning May 1st with coverage starting in July, but the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services hasn’t yet signed off on the package.

Governor Hassan says her administration continues to work closely with federal regulators.

“To meet the benchmarks and aggressive timelines put forward in our fiscally responsible, uniquely New Hampshire solution, our implementation team at the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is moving quickly toward a goal of July 1 to begin coverage under the New Hampshire Health Protection Program,” writes Hassan in a statement.

An estimated 50,000 low-income residents would get health insurance through the program before transitioning to private plans starting in 2016.

The proposal sunsets at the end of 2016 unless a future legislature renews it.

As a general assignment reporter, I pursue breaking news as well as investigative pieces across a range of topics. I’m drawn to stories that are big and timely, as well as those that may appear small but tell us something larger about the state we live in. I also love a good tip, a good character, or a story that involves a boat ride.
