150 Years Of The New Hampshire Union Leader

Flickr Creative Commons

Started as the Manchester Daily Union, the Union Leader grew to be the state’s largest newspaper. Over the past century and a half it has had its challenges- from criticism by some for its conservative slant, to facing the financial struggles of many mid-sized papers.  We’re taking a look at the legacy of the Union Leader.

  • Joe McQuaid: president and publisher of the Union Leader and New Hampshire Sunday News
  • Charlie Perkins: editor at the Union Leader for almost 30 years and currently managing partner of North Village Media, which does consulting, public relations, and editorial services. Perkins is about to publish a book called New Hampshire: 150 Years.

  • Michael Dupre: professor of sociology emeritus at St. Anselm, senior research fellow at NH Institute of Politics and Political Library, specializing in NH politics and political culture.
  • Guy MacMillin: longtime editorial page writer for the Keene Sentinel, now retired.
