Plymouth State University is reorganizing its Center for Rural Partnerships to provide more resources to help communities and businesses. And it gets a name change: now it will be the Center for Business and Community Partnerships.

But the big difference is that resources from throughout the university will be available, says Donald Birx, who took over last year as president.

That help ranges from arts and technology to health and human enrichment, tourism, environment and sustainable development, Birx says.

“Now, we’ve broadened the scope immensely.”

Professors and students will work in teams to help solve problems.

"Businesses often have these ideas that they are really not able to pursue, but they are ideas that lead to intellectual property and real growth," Birx said.

The center can provide help statewide, but Birx says he’s eager to assist the North Country.

“We really look at our job as being the sort of hub for economic development in the North Country.”

Businesses will typically pay a “sponsorship” fee, although in some cases the university might be able to secure a grant to cover the cost.

The reworked center opens Monday.
