After holding 14 listening sessions across New Hampshire, Governor Sununu's Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion has released a preliminary list of recommendations aimed at increasing equity in the state.
Among the six recommendations (you can read them all here) is a call to increase money for diversity training in schools.
Council Chair Rogers Johnson points to several incidents in schools over the past two years, including students singing about the Ku Klux Klan to the tune of Jingle Bells.
"From our standpoint, there is an understanding that there's a lack of understanding of racial issues within the educational system," Johnson says.
Another recommendation says the state should look at how to sustainably fund public transportation.
Sandwich Police Chief and Diversity Council member Douglas Wyman says lack of transportation is something he sees a lot in Carroll County.
"Absent a volunteer organization being able to do it, it could mean people missing doctor's appointments, it could be people not getting access to treatment that they need," Wyman says.
The full report from the council isn't due until the end of the year. But Johnson says, given the input they've received so far, they wanted to get some recommendations out for this legislative session.
