N.H. House Voting Again On Bid To Repeal Death Penalty

NHPR Staff

A month after the Senate voted to leave New Hampshire's death penalty on the books, the House plans to vote again on whether to repeal capital punishment.

The House votes Wednesday on an amendment to a bill dealing with burglary that would require anyone convicted of capital punishment to be sentenced to life in prison.

Last month, the Senate voted 12-12 on a bill approved by the House to repeal the death penalty. The Senate tabled the bill — leaving open the possibility it could be resurrected — but time is running out before the session ends June 5.

Repeal supporters are hoping the Senate will reconsider since its vote was taken before an execution was botched in Oklahoma.
