Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Sunday, April 20, from 10am - 12pm at our pollinator gardens by the lake. These gardens haven’t been tended in over 3 years, so come help us tackle the hard job of weeding and preparing the ground for new plants! Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) AmeriCorps member, Emma Murray, will lead the effort to prepare the garden beds while teaching proper practices and some plant identification. In the past we have planted many native flowers and shrubs and would love to reclaim that area. We will be using trowels, shovels, our hands and hoes to weed and clear out some trailing nightshade vines that have taken over parts of the gardens. In addition to weeding, we will stake out potential locations for the new plants we are getting.

Pollinator gardens help save the declining insect populations. They provide food, shelter and water for native pollinators that would otherwise be struggling. Pollinators are important for many aspects of the environment and keep the food chain in balance, not only for animals, but for humans too. Nearly every three bites of everything you eat are made possible by pollination. Come spend your time in a positive and meaningful way while learning about native plants.
