Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Hong Kong after the protest leaders called for a show of strength in the city’s financial district.

The protest erupted after Hong Kong Chief Secretary Carrie Lam called off talks with student leaders who are asking for full democratic elections in 2017.

Lam said that with ongoing protests, “constructive dialogue” is impossible.

Frank Langfitt, NPR’s international correspondent based in Shanghai, joins Here & Now‘s Robin Young from the protest in Hong Kong.
