Over the weekend a Rutgers University was student was killed by a black bear while hiking in northern New Jersey.

Darsh Patel, 22, was on a hike with four friends when they realized a bear was on their tracks. The group split up running in different directions to avoid the bear and met up later. When they reconvened they realized Patel was not with them. They called police who found Patel dead with bite and claw marks from the bear and the bear standing nearby. The bear was euthanized.

Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson speaks with Here & Now’s animal expert Vicki Croke about the bear attack and what to do when you encounter a bear.
