House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking from the floor, said the articles were necessary to protect national security and the sanctity of the U.S. Constitution. She continued to call him a threat to democracy.
President Trump criticized the impeachment articles as a "partisan crusade," and Republicans in the House picked up a similar argument as the debate began Wednesday.
