From the 1880s until the late 1960s, visitors to the Mt. Washington Auto road could stay in a hotel right at its base.

Now the company that owns the road wants to rebuild that hotel.

“We are hoping to build a 67 room, three- story hotel on the site of the former Great Glen Trails timber-framed base lodge," said Howie Wemyss, is the general manager of the auto road.

Wemyss estimates it will cost between $10 and $11 million dollars and they’re still trying to secure financing.

They also need permits from several state agencies.

The original lodge – adjacent to Route 16 in Greens Grant—burned down in 1967.  The company considered rebuilding in 2007, but cancelled plans due to the recession.
