With Heat Wave In N.H. Weekend Forecast, Experts Offer Safety Tips

The heat index is expected to flirt with 100 in New Hampshire on Friday and Saturday, prompting health warnings and safety tips from local first responders.

The National Weather Service has heat safety tips.

In Manchester, the Health and Fire departments have issued recommendations, including:

  • Drink plenty of fluids - plain water is recommended; avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages
  • Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen:
  • Stay cool indoors - if you lack an air conditioner, the experts recommend visiting a shopping mall or public library for a few horus.
  • Use the "buddy system" - monitor coworkers or friends, and check on friends and neighbors who are 65 and older, a population at greater risk for heat-related illness.

Check your community for designated "cooling centers," such as, in Manchester, the William B. Cashin Senior Center and Manchester Public Library.
In Nashua, cooling locations are the Nashua Senior Activity Center, Nashua YMCA, Nashua Public Library, Pheasant Lane Mall,
