Cannon's Tram Malfuntion Caused by Faulty Part

imgres.jpg

A spokesman for a New Hampshire ski area says a mechanical malfunction caused two tram cars carrying nearly 50 people to become stuck in sub-zero temperatures over the weekend.

The cars were suspended 40 feet above the ground at the Cannon Mountain Ski Area on Sunday. Crews evacuated the passengers, lowering them with rope from the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway in Franconia. No one was hurt.

Spokesman Greg Keeler said Monday the cause of the malfunction was a piece in a motor bearing pack that, for system safety backup reasons, caused the brakes to engage and the cars to stop.

Keeler told the Caledonian Record the part was taken from the motor and sent in for repair. He said the goal is to have the tramway running by this coming weekend, if not sooner.
