Portsmouth Celebrates The Legacy Of Martin Luther King Jr.

Prominent New Hampshire politicians joined celebrants in Portsmouth this morning to recognize the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Congresswoman Carol Shea Porter, State Senators David Watters, Martha Fuller-Clark, and members of Portsmouth's City Counsel joined in celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr. this morning. Before a room crowded with black and white faces, Senator Shaheen recalled her upbringing in southern Missouri:

I grew up in southern Missouri, went to in segregated schools as a kid, I remember vividly separate drinking fountains, separate restrooms, going to the movie theater where if you were an African American, you were allowed on the balcony, but you weren't allowed to sit on the floor."

A spokesperson on behalf of Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte also addressed the crowd.

Afterward, Reverend Lillian Buckley of Bow Lake Baptist Chruch in Strafford urged political leaders to seek neither money nor votes, saying “we as a society need people who are not afraid to act.”
