Thanksgiving 2019 Programming on NHPR

As you gather around the feasting table with family and friends and give thanks, NHPR is your perfect Thanksgiving holiday soundtrack.

Programs that celebrate the importance of chronicling your family history, the simple gift of gratitude, and some last minute recipe tips are all on order on the NHPR airwaves on Thursday, November 28. Here’s our glorious spread of Thanksgiving holiday programming:

9-10 am – Giving Thanks: A Celebration of Fall, Food, & Gratitude 

From American Public Media, Giving Thanks offers a contemporary celebration of gratitude, with classical music and stories of Thanksgiving from some great American writers.

Giving Thanks remembers poet Mary Oliver as she reads poems of gratitude and nature. Walt Whitman stops by to celebrate Thanksgiving and his 200th birthday, and New Yorker writer, best-selling author, humorist, and turkey aficionado Adam Gopnik will also be on hand.

12-2 pm – The Splendid Table’s Turkey Confidential

Avoid those last-minute kitchen snafus with a call to The Splendid Table’s annual live Thanksgiving call-in show – Turkey Confidential. During the biggest cooking day of the year, Splendid Table host Francis Lam will be available for tips and advice to help cooks, kitchen helpers and dinner guests everywhere. Francis will be joined by special guests, including Samin Nosrat (author of the bestselling Salt Fat Acid Heat) and Melissa Clark (cookbook author and food columnist for The New York Times Food section).

2-3 pm – The Great Thanksgiving Listen from StoryCorps

Gather round the radio with your family for this special from StoryCorps, produced in collaboration with NPR. Hosted by Audie Cornish, the program highlights the importance of documenting family history. Listeners will be given instructions on how to best record conversations with older family members, mentors, friends or folks they admire in their communities. The program will also feature interviews with StoryCorps founder Dave Isay and Dr. Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress.

3-4 pm – Milk Street Radio

The weekly show and podcast that celebrates food and culinary traditions focuses on the Thanksgiving Rules: turkey, cranberry sauce and cake versus pie. Host Christopher Kimball and guests will chat with Stella Parks of Serious Eats about her pumpkin pie secret and a fresh twist on à la mode; Vivian Howard of A Chef’s Life on PBS invites us to her kitchen for North Carolina turkey and sides; California chefs Alice Waters, Gonzalo Guzmán and more share their favorite Thanksgiving memories; Dr. Aaron Carroll talks food safety and stuffing. Also during the hour – preparing a quick Cranberry and Candied Ginger Buckle; and Adam Gopnik talks the magic of leftovers.

7-8 pm – Every Good Thing

From American Public Media, host Andrea Blain and classical music fans from around the country take time to give thanks and celebrate the meaningful gift of music, and listeners from across the country will share stories about their favorite classical music pieces.

8-10 pm – Best of the Best – The 2019 Third Coast Festival Broadcast

From PRX, the Third Coast International Audio Festival is back with its annual Best of the Best broadcast, featuring the winners of the 2019 Third Coast / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation The annual ode to audio storytelling takes listeners on a journey through what’s possible when stories are made through sounds. Host Gwen Macsai presents the top audio stories of the year — and dives deep with some of the producers for a behind-the-scenes look at making beautiful stories in sound.
