SPOOKY: Portsmouth Cemetery Tours

SPOOKY: Portsmouth Cemetery Tours

Cemeteries may have a spooky reputation, but they are full of invaluable information about our past. Take a walk with us through Portsmouth’s two oldest cemeteries - Point of Graves and North Cemetery - and learn about how colonial New England viewed death and their funerals - who spoke or didn't speak, how many gifts were given, how much alcohol was consumed, and more. We'll visit the graves of some fascinating Portsmouth residents and take a look at how our relationship with death has changed over the last few centuries.

These tours will be led by the Portsmouth Historical Society.

North Cemetery Tours will take place on October 2, 11, 16, 25, 30. Participants should meet up at North Cemetery, 114 Maplewood Ave, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Point of Graves Tours will take place on October 4, 9, 18, 23, and November 1. Participants should meet up at Point of Graves, 1-199 Mechanic Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Please wear sturdy shoes as the ground can be uneven. The entirety of this 90-minute walking tour will be outside, so please dress accordingly.
