Safety is Cool: A Guide to Winter Hiking

Safety is Cool: A Guide to Winter Hiking

Conquering the trails in the cold doesn't have to be an impossible hurdle! Join the Squam Lakes Association for our program designed to turn winter challenges into confident experiences.

We’ll start with an essential presentation at the SLA building at 10:00 am on the topics of layering, gear packing, and weather assessment. Afterwards we'll head out in our van for a 0.9 mile hike up to West Rattlesnake Mountain to enjoy a stunning view of Squam Lake.

We want you to be comfy on the trail, so please come prepared with water, snacks, and your waterproof gear. If you’re short on supplies, the SLA is happy to lend out extra snowshoes, microspikes, and day packs! You can find our full 'what to bring' guide right here: https://www.squamlakes.org/sites/default/files/uploads/winter_equipment_guide.pdf

We’ll wrap up the day with a Q&A to ensure you leave ready for your next winter adventure!

For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other Adventure Ecology programs throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and take place in trails of all lengths and difficulties throughout the four seasons. The focus is to become more comfortable traversing and exploring our beautiful landscape around Squam while socializing with the community.
The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.
