Presidential Elections In Burundi Delayed

Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza has rescheduled tomorrow’s presidential election until June 5. The opposition, regional and international leaders had asked for the vote to be postponed until order was restored.

There have been weeks of violent protests against Nkurunziza’s decision to run for a third term in office in next month’s presidential election. His party has been accused of launching a campaign of repression against journalists, with reports of his loyalists smashing up media buildings, as well as threatening journalists.

Radio stations have been closed and independent radio in particular was where much of the coup ended up being played out. The BBC’s Alan Kasujja explains.
