NPR's Guy Raz reports from the eastern German city of Schwerin that since East Germany adopted the West German currency ten years ago, the road to economic reform in the East has been rocky. Although Schwerin has burnished its image, repaving cobblestone streets and restoring historic buildings, the end of Communist rule has meant the loss of jobs for many. Many older residents feel resentment toward Western Germans. However, young people say the real gap is not between Eastern and Western Germans, but between the generations.

Noah talks to Steve Delsohn (del-SON), author of 'The Fire Inside: Firefighters Talk About Their Lives.' Delsohn interviewed 108 firefighters for his book. Two of those firefighters, Phillip Buffa of Washington, D.C.'s Rescue 3 and Keith Walker, Jr. of Alexandria, Virginia's Engine 55, met with Delsohn while he was visiting the Washington area. The firefighters talked about their fears of flashovers (when entire rooms ignite all at once) and of being trapped alone in a burning building. Delsohn says that about 100 firefighters are killed in the line of duty every year while another 100,000 are injured. HISTORY OF FENCES -- Noah Adams walks through the exhibition Between Fences now open at the National Building Museum in Washington with the exhibit's curator Gregory Dreicer (DRY-sir). The exhibit examines the role of fences in American landscape and culture. It includes stone fences, wrought iron, barbed wire, chain link and the materials used to designate international boundaries.
