On The Trail With Tulsi Gabbard: U.S. Should Not Be 'Policeman of the World'

U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, speaking at Plaistow Public Library in March of 2019.

Tulsi Gabbard, a congresswoman who has served two tours in the Middle East with the Hawaii Army National Guard, has emerged as the most vocal isolationist candidate in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

America should "stop trying to act as the policeman of the world," she said in an interview with theNPR Politics Podcastand New Hampshire Public Radio.

"Sending our military into harm's way and then trying to export some American model of democracy that may or may not be welcome by the people in those countries, and it's proven to have been a failure," Gabbard said.

This interview was conducted by NPR's Tamara Keith and NHPR's Josh Rogers.

Rogers noted there is a large Gabbard sign in his town ... on property owned by a Libertarian.

"People from across party lines are coming to our town halls and they're drawn to the message that I'm bringing and the leadership that I'm offering in this bid to run for President," she replied. "We can have differences, sometimes big differences on many issues, but people are coming together because they're recognizing the need to end these wasteful regime change wars that our couintry has waging for far too long that have proven to be so costly."
