High Temperature Record Nearly Broken On Mount Washington

Mount Washington has had three of its warmest July days ever in the past week, but it didn't quite break its all-time high of 72 degrees.

Weather observer Ian Bailey says they came close Thursday, hitting 71 degrees in the early afternoon.

"So even though we weren't seeing the extreme weather that we normally do, it was a very exciting time for us, and everybody was kind of hoping and wondering if we were going to smash that record and we came very, very close."

Bailey says it's really unusual to see prolonged heat with bright sun and low winds atop the Northeast's highest peak. But now, he says they're dipping back down into more average, cool, cloudy weather...at least until next week's heat wave sets in.
