Gender Identity Rights Bill Gets 2nd N.H. House Hearing

Jason Moon / NHPR

A bill to provide legal protections for transgender people will get a second public hearing Tuesday.

The bill’s first hearing drew so many people that it had to be moved into Representatives Hall, the largest room in the State House. Then, it went on for so long that the House Judiciary Committee decided it would need more than one day.

Most of those spoke were supporters of the bill, which would add gender identity to the state’s existing anti-discrimination laws.

The bill has bipartisan support in both chambers. Governor Chris Sununu has said he is inclined to move forward with the bill, though he hasn’t committed to signing it.

The second public hearing will be held in Representatives Hall at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Supporters say they are expecting strong turnout once again.
