Another longtime New Hampshire advocate for people with disabilities is retiring. The Crotched Mountain Foundation announced Friday CEO and President Donald Shumway would step down early next year. In a statement, he said "After decades of focusing on all families, it is long overdue that I focus on being present in the lives of those I love."
Shumway is a former commissioner of the state Health and Human Services Department, and he led the Division of Mental Health at the time New Hampshire ended its policy of institutionalizing individuals with disabilities, moving instead toward providing community-based services. Crotched Mountain says it will launch a national search for his successor
Shumway plans to continue serving as co-chair of a state commission on the state's transition to Medicaid managed care. The announcement of Shumway's retirement comes shortly after the retirement of Richard Cohen, who had led the Disabilities Rights Center since 2002.
