Nearly $70K In Uncashed Checks Found In Suspended County Attorney's Office

Investigators looking at a veteran New Hampshire county attorney and his deputy say they've found nearly $70,000 in uncashed checks in the office, but say the checks aren't connected to the investigation.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's office stripped Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams of his prosecutorial authority last week. Deputy Tom Reid was put on paid administrative leave.

State and federal officials wouldn't say why they're investigating Reams, except to say they've received complaints.

WMUR-TV reports the months-old checks for deposit were mentioned at Tuesday's county commissioners' meeting by James Boffetti, interim county attorney. They came from towns that contract with the county attorney for prosecution services.

Boffetti said there's no impropriety involved, but letting that much money hang around isn't good business practice.
