Anthem Releases Some Sample Rates For Insurance Marketplace

Anthem Blue Cross is providing asnapshotof some of the rates it will charge for insurance plans bought in the new health marketplaces. The company will offer 11 different plans across a range of tiers, known as 'metal' levels. Anthem will have five bronze plans, which come with higher deductibles and lower monthly premiums. The company will also offer three silver plans and two gold plans, which have lower deductibles but higher monthly premiums.

Anthem will also offer one catastrophic plan that is limited to purchasers under 30-years old.

One example provided is a silver-level policy with a $2,500 deductible: that comes with a monthly premium of $226 for a 21-year old. A 60-year old will pay $612 for the same plan. But through the health law, individuals can get tax subsidies based on income to help defray some of those costs…so that same 60-year old with an annual salary of $35,000 would only pay $270 per month for the silver-level.

Anthem says it was able to lower rates by 25% by reducing the number of doctors and hospitals that will accept plans sold in the marketplace.

Anthem is likely to be the only company selling insurance products in New Hampshire’s exchange when it opens October 1st..
