A Special Tour with "Reading the Forested Landscape" Author Tom Wessels

A Special Tour with "Reading the Forested Landscape" Author Tom Wessels

We are thrilled to welcome Tom Wessels, author of Reading the Forested Landscape, a terrestrial ecologist, and professor emeritus at Antioch University. Described as "the Sherlock Holmes of forest forensics", Tom will show you a whole new way of exploring the natural world by taking you on a fascinating journey through New England's ecology and history. Tom will interpret the history of the property at Bedrock Gardens, and point out landscape features and unique adaptations of the trees encountered on the walk, plus numerous examples of intriguing coevolved interrelationships. He will show you how to identify evidence of farming, husbandry, logging and other factors that have shaped the New England landscape as we know it today. You will never walk through the woods the same way again.

This event is perfect for all New Englanders but nature lovers, gardeners, students, teachers, hikers, scientists, and environmentalists will be particularly pleased. Intended for adults and older teens. Don't miss it!

About the Teacher
Tom Wessels is a terrestrial ecologist and professor emeritus at Antioch University New England, where he founded the master’s degree program in Conservation Biology. Tom has conducted programs and workshops throughout the country for more than three decades, and is the author of six books, including his newest publication, New England's Roadside Ecology: Explore 30 of the Region's Unique Natural Areas. As a generalist, Tom’s interests include forest, desert, alpine, and arctic ecosystems, as well as geomorphology, evolutionary ecology, complex systems science, and the interface of landscape and culture. His background in ecology and complexity allows Tom to apply the principles of self-organization and co-evolution as a means to examine human systems, such as the workings of an organization or even an economic system. His books include: Reading the Forested Landscape, The Granite Landscape, Untamed Vermont, The Myth of Progress, and Forest Forensics, and Granite, Fire, and Fog: The Natural and Cultural History of Acadia.9780881504200_300
