North Carolina Governor Files Lawsuit Over Transgender Bathroom Law

Republican Governor Pat McCrory has filed what’s called ‘a declaratory judgement action’ in response to a Department of Justice letter warning that the state’s new transgender bathroom law violates the Civil Rights Act. The law requires transgender people to use bathrooms that correspond to the sex on their birth certificate, rather than the gender they identify with.

The controversial measure has led some businesses to condemn the state and refuse to do business there; musicians, including Bruce Springsteen and Demi Lovato, have cancelled concerts in North Carolina. Jorge Valencia, reporter for North Carolina Radio, WUNC tells Jeremy Hobson the latest.
