Shaheen Campaigns Against Hobby Lobby Ruling In Concord

Campaigning in Concord today, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen took aim at the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that clears the way for some for-profit corporations to deny contraception coverage to their employees on religious grounds.

At a roundtable lunch with a half-dozen women, Shaheen warned that the ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby restarts a bitter fight  -- across the country and in the U.S. Senate  -- over women’s health care.

"That about one of the biggest battles we had was over the Blunt Amendment, and whether they would give employers carte blanche to decide whether they would provide contraceptive coverage and we saw how that broke down in the Senate," Shaheen said.

The Blunt Amendment, which was co-sponsored by Shaheen’s Republican rival, former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown, failed two years ago on a near party line vote.
