N.H. Preps For Hand-Held Cell Phone Ban Public Awareness Campaign

A campaign is set to launch soon aimed at raising awareness of a new law taking effect later this year banning the use of hand-held cell phones while driving.

Come July, drivers in the Granite State will have to use a hands-free device if they want to talk on their cell phones.

Department of Transportation spokesman Bill Boynton says a group has been working on ways to make sure drivers aren’t caught off guard by the change.

“The auto dealers are on board and will be placing materials in new cars. We’re going to have television public service announcements. There’ll be websites and outreach I think into the schools as much as possible, as well.”

Boynton expects the campaign to launch in the coming weeks.

New Hampshire joins more than a dozen states with similar laws, including Vermont and Connecticut.

There is likely to be an effort to repeal the ban in the upcoming legislative session, though that would face an almost certain veto from Governor Maggie Hassan.
