Fireside Chats and Safety
Fireside Chats and Safety
This Week's Program: Join the LRCC at Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest (CRMF) from 2pm-5pm on a quick 0.6 mile hike to the campsites starting at West Fire Road trailhead parking lot located on College Rd. We will hike in and have a chat about fire safety and learn some tips and tricks to start them. All experience levels are welcome! We encourage those who already know some tips or tricks to join us and share them. We will teach you how to stay warm and how to safely build a fire. Learn or practice your fire building skills and chat with your other participants around a fire that you helped start! This is a great way to get your practice in before camping season starts up.
What to Bring: Participants are welcome to bring their own sit pads if they have them (foam sleeping pads work great for this or even your own backpack works if it has a foam backing. You can also use blankets if you wouldn't mind getting dirty.) This is not required and would only help make you feel more comfortable. You should also bring headlamps with you for the hike out after the program, participants are welcome to leave early if walking in the dark is not comfortable. The SLA will have materials (matches, lighters, fire starters) for the program and teach you how to use them if you do not know how.
Participants should bring their own food and water for the hike in and for something to eat around the fire if they want. Participants should also be sure to have appropriate attire and layering for winter hiking, extra layers, and comfortable water resistant hiking shoes as well as snowshoes and/or microspikes depending on conditions. The SLA can provide sit pads, snowshoes & microspikes for up to six participants.
Audience: Adults and children are welcome to attend! This program is for all skill and comfort levels. Anyone who has experience in starting fires and wants to share some tips or tricks, or anyone who would like to learn how should sign up for this program. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
