Draft Animal Power Field Days

Draft Animal Power Field Days
DAPFD is the flagship annual event of the Draft Animal Power Network, a nonprofit group of practitioners with a shared commitment to preserving traditional draft animal practices while advancing innovative solutions for land stewardship, food production, and community enrichment.
Friday features day-long Intensive Workshops. This year we are proud to offer our classic Draft Horse Basics, Oxen Basics, Animal-Power in Farming, and Animal-Power in Forestry as well as Large Animal Emergency Rescue and Build an Ox Cart in a Day. Large Animal Emergency Rescue will be led by paramedic Vicki Schmidt, and will focus on how to prevent and handle emergency situations with large animals. Veteran teamster, teacher and maker Donn Hewes will guide participants in a hands-on metal-working experience to create an ox cart that will sell at auction. Saturday features shorter sessions during the day varying from skidding logs, plowing, basic chainsaw maintenance, hoof trimming and harness adjustment to building a stone boat or large animal rescue. Saturday ends with our popular benefit auction. And on Sunday, join us for a Harness Repair Cafe and fun activities like the Obstacle Course and Humans vs. Horse Tug o’ War, as well as DAPNet’s Annual Member Meeting.
This educational conference welcomes both beginners and experienced teamsters, offering hands-on learning, and the exchange of knowledge on the use of draft animal power. We invite a variety of presenters and teamsters and ensure a diversity of draft animals are represented, from mules and horses to oxen and mini ponies. You are welcome to attend whether you’re just curious about, or already deeply involved in using live power.
Registration is available on a three-tier sliding scale to accommodate a range of budgets. We recommend streamlining your visit with online pre-registration at draftanimalpower.org, where you’ll also find up-to-date information about the event. If you’re not online, call (518) 290-0056 to chat with our administrative staff. The location offers free parking and dry camping. A catered lunch and dinner are included with registration.
