Animation that Feels Like a Dreamscape: Danski Tang at MacDowell Downtown
Animation that Feels Like a Dreamscape: Danski Tang at MacDowell Downtown
On Friday, November 7, MacDowell Downtown welcomes animation filmmaker and visual artist Danski Tang for Slicing Time — an immersive evening exploring the surreal, sensory worlds of her work.
Tang’s hand-drawn works weave personal narrative, surreal imagery, and evocative soundscapes into deeply intimate and thought-provoking experiences. Using a variety of animation techniques, Tang creates organically evolving visual worlds that seem to bubble up from the subconscious with themes of cultural indoctrination and body autonomy. Her MacDowell Downtown presentation will feature a selection of paintings and drawings, two shorts, and a music video. Before taking questions, Tang will share insights on her works' inner life on the path from inception to completion.
Hailing from China and now based in Los Angeles, Tang earned her MFA in Experimental Animation from the California Institute of the Arts. Her films have been screened the world over, including MoMA DocFortnight, Melbourne Film Festival, Hot Docs, Hiroshima Animation Festival, and the Vienna Shorts Festival. Her latest film, Umbilical, was recognized with the Silver Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival.
