WATERVILLE, Maine — Baseball fans in Maine no longer have to travel to Chicago to get a glimpse of the famed Wrigley Field.
The Morning Sentinel reports the Waterville City Council approved a memorandum of understanding Tuesday with the Alfond Youth Center to partner in renovating Purnell-Wrigley Ballfield into a replica of the Chicago Cubs’ legendary stadium.
Youth Center CEO Karen Walsh has been working with Parks and Recreation director Matt Skehan on the $1 million project for about two years.
The multipurpose turf field will feature a public address building, bathrooms, dugouts, lights and access for children with disabilities. Technical school students will build a concession stand.
Councilor Sydney Mayhew says the field will draw people to Waterville and create revenue.
Walsh says the goal is to begin construction in June.
