The state has ordered a Hampton Beach hotel to take steps to remediate bacteria discovered in a hot tub and spa area that led to an outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease, including one death.
On Monday, the state announced that an additional case was confirmed, bringing the total number of patients to 15.
The order issued Sunday night by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services also directs the Sands Resort on Ashworth Avenue to notify guests of the presence of Legionella bacteria, after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control confirmed the bacteria from initial test results.
The results indicate the bacteria at multiple sources within the Sands Resort water system--not just limited to the hot tub spa, according to DHHS Commissioner Jeffrey A. Meyers. In a statement, Meyers said he issued the order to protect the health of guests, visitors, and residents.
"The Sands Resort will immediately notify current and future guests of the Legionella outbreak and take steps to remediate the premise plumbing system in order to mitigate the risk to the public's health," Meyers said.
The CDC may have additional tests results later this week.
