An Alarming Rise In Food Allergies

food allergies.jpg

A recent report by the Center for Disease Control shows a huge jump in the number of American kids with food and skin allergies. Some are so severe, they’re life-threatening.  There are several theories about why this is happening, including the proliferation of anti-bacterial soaps.  We’ll talk about that, and why advances in treatment has been so frustratingly slow.

  • Dr. Mark Holbreich- An allergist in Indianapolis who treats children and adults.  He has conducted research on Amish populations, which exhibit very low rates of allergies.
  • Dr. Wayne Shreffler-  Director of the Food Allergy Center at Massachusetts General Hospital,  where he is also chief of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.
  • Dr. Susan Schaefer- An adult and pediatric allergy/asthma specialist with Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
