A police officer responding to a report of a man shooting at his family members in Raymond on Saturday was shot when the man opened fire on police at the scene, according to state police.
The armed man ran from the house on Ham Road. Police have set up a perimeter around the area to try to apprehend the shooter, who remains at large as of Saturday evening.
State Police Major Brendan Davey identified the man as Matthew J. Masse, 38, of Raymond. Davey said he remains at large and the manhunt remains active.
“He was last known to be on foot and he was armed with a long gun,” Davey said at a news conference Saturday night.
The officer wounded in the shooting is an officer with the Nottingham Police Department, he said.
The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Davey said.
New Hampshire State Police and other law enforcement agencies are on the scene to assist Raymond police in the search.
Police ask residents in the area of Ham Road and Nottingham Road to shelter in place, and for people to avoid the area.
Officers responded to the initial report on Ham Road at about 1:30 p.m.
Police said the man is a middle-aged white male, 5’11” and 202 pounds, with black hair and hazel eyes. Police believe he is still on foot.
“Anyone who sees a subject matching this description in the area should call 911 immediately,” police said. “The suspect is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.”
