The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 74 percent of those who have a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering and math -- known as STEM -- are not employed in STEM occupations.
The Bureau also created a pretty cool interactive graphic comparing where STEM majors end up working, by both race and gender. Here are some other takeaways:
- Engineering is the major with the highest earnings ($92,900) but the fewest women (14%)
- The major with the lowest earnings was visual and performing arts ($50,700)
- Non-STEM management occupations employed the most male college graduates (3.8 million), while education occupations employed the most female college graduates (4.3 million)
In the meantime, leaders and educators in New Hampshire are embarking on a comprehensive effort to double the number of STEM graduates in New Hampshire by 2025. Here's a video explaining why states like N.H. are making this effort -- especially given the data released this week by the Census Bureau.
