The Art of Upcycling

The Art of Upcycling

The average person in the U.S. creates nearly five pounds of waste per day, and only about 32% of it is recycled or composted. That adds up to almost 300 million tons of trash each year. What if some of that “waste” could become art?

Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Wednesday, April 8th for a drop in workshop on upcycling. We will hold this event from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the SLA barn building. Here we’ll transform everyday discarded materials into imaginative sculptures, mosaics, and characters. Using bottle caps, aluminum cans, plastic lids, old electronics, and other recycled materials, participants will reimagine trash as treasure. Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) AmeriCorps member, Macie Kane, will lead the program.

This program is for everyone and anyone who wants to create. There are no rules when it comes to art, especially art made from trash. So bring a thinking cap, some creative juices, and possibly a Pinterest board, and come join our crafting party!

All materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring clean recyclables from home to incorporate into their designs. Come ready to experiment, collaborate, and leave with a one-of-a-kind piece of art and a fresh perspective on what we throw away.

For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other Adventure Ecology programs throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA who perform important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission.

The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.
