Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal declared his candidacy for the 2016 Republican presidential primary on June 24th, 2015.
Jindal is a Louisiana native born to immigrant parents from India. After completing his Masters degree as a Rhodes Scholar, he began his political career as an intern for Louisiana Rep. Jim McCrery. Next came a series of political appointments, first to the post of secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, and later, as president of that state's university system.
After losing the governor's race in 2003, Jindal won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2004. He was re-elected in 2006, and ran for Governor again in 2007. His win made him the first Indian-American governor in United States history.
