Timeless in a way that few other acts can claim, The Spinners are one of the most iconic and enduring groups in R&B history. With a towering legacy spanning over six decades, The Spinners have never lost their universal appeal, as evidenced most recently by the group’s long-awaited induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.

The quintet created and came to define the smooth sound of Philadelphia Soul, channeling the highs and lows of romance and heartbreak into a catalog of classic hits, beloved across generations. Throughout the years the Spinners remained perched atop the Pop, R&B, and Adult Contemporary Charts, with smash singles like “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love,” “Then Came You,” “The Rubberband Man” and many more – earning six Grammy nominations, 18 Platinum and Gold Albums, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and selling millions of records worldwide in the process. Their legendary repertoire has earned a permanent place in the American songbook.

Though The Spinners epitomized the lush sound of Philly Soul in the 1970s, they got their start in Detroit at Tri-Phi Records (run by Harvey Fuqua of the Moonglows and his then-wife, Gwen Gordy), which later merged into Motown, in 1961. The Spinners signed with Atlantic Records in 1972, teaming up with producer Thom Bell in Philadelphia where the group blossomed under his production aegis. Having scored iconic hits while at Motown and Philly, they are the progenitors of the “MotownPhilly” soul sound.

The Spinners had another classic hit single, “Working My Way Back To You,” topping the Pop and R&B charts, earning the group its twelfth gold record. The Love Trippin album (1980) also included “Cupid,” one of the fastest-selling records in The Spinners’ illustrious career. The follow-up LP, Labor of Love, featured such stand-out tunes as “Yesterday Once More,” and “Long Live Soul Music.”

As the group enters its 70th year, they remain an integral part of the cultural zeitgeist. In having made national news in 2023 with a high profile donation of over 400 stage uniforms to the Motown Museum in May as well as an appearance at the Kennedy Center Honors in December, where they took the national stage with Mickey Guyton in tribute to the legendary Dionne Warwick, performing a stellar rendition of their chart-topping duet with Ms. Warwick, “Then Came You.”

A perennial fan favorite, the Spinners continue to perform to sold out crowds at home and abroad while maintaining a loyal coterie of die-hard aficionados. The Spinners have left an indelible impact in the annals of music history, and perhaps most importantly, on the hearts of millions of fans throughout the world.

On Friday, April 24, Murphy's Taproom and Carriage House in Bedford, NH welcomes America's Master Mentalist, Jon Stetson, for an unforgettable evening of Mind Reading, Psychic Comedy and Interactive Mystery.

On the night of September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill drove through New Hampshire’s White Mountains on their way back to Portsmouth from their honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls and Montreal. On Route 3, near Franconia, they saw a light in the sky.

Their world, and ours, was never the same again.

While the Hills rose to fame due to their tale of alien abduction and subsequent influence on pop culture, the Hills’ impact reaches far beyond the extraordinary events of that night. As Portsmouth residents, civil rights activists, and community leaders, Betty and Barney Hill were part of a powerful and often overlooked chapter in local and national history.

Admission to the exhibition is $10 general admission, $5 discounted admission (children 5-18, seniors over 62, students, and Portsmouth residents), and FREE for members. Tickets are purchased on site.

THROUGH LINE celebrates basic mark-making as a foundation for the remarkable. Each of the six artists on view explores line through the lens of their distinct practices and mediums, ranging from marker to string, chalk, and even dirt! Together, they apply their shared interest in using lines as the basis for their work to boldly illustrate how understated, rudimentary marks can be explored more deeply. Collectively, the artworks on view act as tributes to the mark, celebrating the multitude of ways lines can be made, manipulated, and made monumental. In dialogue with one another, thematic commonalities or through lines between the works emerge and bring the exhibition into focus.

The featured artists shake up flat presentations of line, most breaking the plane entirely to render gesture and form in physical space. While their mediums are vast and divergent, each artist enters the conversation through painstakingly repetitious, modest, and slow gestures. They amass into vibrant works that arrest the viewer just as quickly as they entice them to slow down and look more closely. Through drawing (on and off the wall) digital media, sculpture, and installation, THROUGH LINE reminds us that simple lines are the basis of what can truly shape anything.

Join Professional Baker and Pastry Instructor Chef Allen to create a perfect and realistic edible cupcake flower arrangement. After mastering the technique for making the perfect buttercream frosting, participants will practice various piping techniques for realistic-looking flowers, including dahlias, hydrangeas, roses, daisies, sunflowers, and more. Participants will leave the program with their decorated cupcakes as well as the skills to confidently make more cupcake bouquets at home.

What do a secure tent, a sturdy boat line, and a lifesaving rescue all have in common? Knots! Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Saturday, April 25 for a hands-on program where we’ll practice the age-old tradition of knots! We will hold this event from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the SLA building. We’ll start with the basics, learning both how to tie a knot and its many functions, and after practicing, we’ll put our new skills to the test. Working as a team, we’ll design and build a functional tarp shelter, using our knots to create a structure that’s both strong and adaptable. You’ll leave with practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and a set of knots you can use in your own outdoor adventures.Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) AmeriCorps member, Macie Kane, will lead the program.
All materials will be provided, all we ask is that you bring your enthusiasm to learn. Participants are encouraged to bring water and snacks. This program is for ages 12 and up, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
