The Great Mystery: Old Music for a New Advent

The Great Mystery: Old Music for a New Advent

Featuring lutenist Joel Spears, St. John's Concerts On The Hill is proud to welcome Joel back to our St. John's Selects series. This sold-out event was a popular highlight in our 2024-25 Concert Series, and is sure to bring audiences into the spirit of Advent again this holiday season.

An intimate evening of Advent-themed music to bring joy and wonder into the beautiful Roberts Recital Hall at historic St. John’s Episcopal Church. So many of the best-loved songs surrounding Advent come from the middle ages and renaissance, when the lute was popular and in many ways the most important instrument in Western Music. In this return engagement inside beautiful Roberts Recital Hall, Joel Spears will play original Advent pieces and Noels for lute, theorbo (the 6-foot long mega lute) and electric guitar, including his own arrangements of pieces by Tomás Luis de Victoria, Lorenzo Tracetti, Nicolas Vallet, and others.

Roberts Recital Hall, an intimate venue with a maximum seated capacity of 40, will serve as an ideal setting for this wonderful acoustic music, providing incredible resonance and ambience for concertgoers to delight in the serenity and nuance of Spears' capable interpretations of these pieces. Don't wait to get your tickets!
