Plans to build a bike path in Portsmouth are moving forward and city officials say they will conduct more public meetings.
After the state Department of Transportation approves the city's engineering study, City Transportation Director Juliet Walker tells the Portsmouth Herald preliminary design work on the proposed bike path can begin.
The path will be along Lafayette Road from Portsmouth High School to downtown Portsmouth.
The City Council voted to move forward with a design offering protected bike lanes on either side of Lafayette Road in April.
The state Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program provided funding for the initiative.
Consultants hired by the city are recommending the use of flexible and short vertical posts to protect the bike lane, which are bendable and easily removable.
