The FIRST FRIDAY of every month, year-round, downtown Portsmouth celebrates its inspired art community with special flair by presenting its Art ‘Round Town gallery walk. Art ‘Round Town is free and open to the public taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. Visit participating gallery websites for details.

As a thriving creative community rich in history, Portsmouth retains and honors its past while continuously cultivating an exciting contemporary art scene. Within its early-19th century brick facades and streetscapes, the collective Portsmouth art galleries represent the work of international and national artists from as distant as Europe, New York,San Francisco, and Los Angeles and as near as down the street.

The Vermont Jazz Center presents the 7th Emerging Artist Festival on Friday & Saturday, November 1- 2, 2024.

The event begins with youth jazz ensembles at 118 Elliot Gallery Friday, November 1, & continues at the Vermont Jazz Center Saturday, November 2 with student groups starting 11:00 AM.

All events are open to the public & free to youth attendees. Donations to the VJC Scholarship Fund are encouraged.

Ms. Nkwelle's concert will also be livestreamed. Students are participating from areas of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont.

Ekep Nkwelle presents a masterclass 4 PM Saturday followed by a concert with her quartet: Ekep Nkwelle, vocals; Luther Allison, piano; Liany Mateo, bass; Anwar Marshall, drums. 

Ekep Nkwelle, a 24-year-old Cameroonian-American jazz vocalist, has carved her musical path from Washington, DC, to New York City- from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, to Howard University, to Julliard’s graduate program in jazz.

Nkwelle has sung with jazz luminaries including Russell Malone, Cyrus Chestnut, Peter Washington, Emmet Cohen and Endea Owens.

She has performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in iconic venues nationwide including Radio City Music, the Library of Congress, Blues Alley, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, & the Strathmore & performed at Newport, Montclair, Hudson, & DC jazz festivals. 

In 2023 Nkwelle was nominated by Wynton Marsalis to receive the Juilliard Career Advancement Grant; this recognition was followed by her performance on NPR's "Tiny Desk."

Ms. Nkwelle was chosen by Dee Dee Bridgewater to participate in her exclusive, all-women artistic residency, The Woodshed Network. As one of Jazz at Lincoln Center's newest rising stars, Ekep Nkwelle is poised to shape the future of jazz.

Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, Nov. 1, from 5-8 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

25th Annual Dunfey Exhibition, Resilience

The New Hampshire Art Association will open the much-anticipated 24th Annual Joan L. Dunfey Open Juried Exhibition, titled "Resilience," at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery this November. This exhibition, sponsored by the Joan L. Dunfey Fund for the Arts through the New Hampshire Charitable Fund, explores the multifaceted nature of resilience through art. Each piece showcased looks into personal adversity, social and political turmoil, environmental crises, cultural transformation, and many more topics to visualize inner strength. This show was juried by Devon Zimmermann, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.

RECONfigured by Maria Oakley

Step into the world of Maria Oakley, where the boundaries between life’s most tender moments and its harshest realities blur into vivid, hyper-sentimental surrealism. In her upcoming exhibition RECONfigured, Oakley invites you to traverse the spaces between love and loss, domesticity and duty, and culture and self-discovery. With every piece, she shares not just the story of a woman, mother, immigrant, and U.S. Marine, but of a soul continually reshaped by the forces of the ever-present struggle for identity. Oakley tells her story through painting and sculpture to fully realize her vision in multiple forms. This is not simply art—it’s a visceral journey through the unseen layers of experience that shape us all.

iConic: Box to Culture by Bob Thoresen

iConic: From Box to Culture calls attention to how the very devices that were designed to streamline our lives have contributed to a digital landscape marked by information overload, addiction to constant connectivity, and the isolating phenomenon of "doom-scrolling." Through repurposed Apple packaging—sleek, tactile, and elegantly designed—the exhibition examines how these highly curated objects have played a role in creating a society increasingly boxed into virtual spaces. Thoresen utilizes Apple product packaging to construct sculptural works that convey this message.

Show, Don't Tell by Cassie Doyon

Show, Don’t Tell is a powerful collection of abstract sculptures that dives into the personal and collective psychological pain experienced in recent years. This body of work is a poignant reflection of global issues like the pandemic, environmental crises, and political manipulation, which have deeply impacted relationships and communities worldwide. Using glass, ceramic, and stone artist Cassie Doyon creates mosaics to express feelings that can't be said with words.

GHOST LIGHT is a haunted attraction which takes small groups of people through our entire building and even the back yard, which has been furnished with theatrical lighting, sets, special effects, and scary creatures to create a haunted house walk-through experience, with a touch of immersive theatre magic! Tours run every 10 minutes, however, each tour can only accommodate up to 14 guests, so we recommend selecting your time slot and purchasing tickets ahead of time. DublinArts, a full spectrum arts center located in Dublin, NH, is proudly producing the play often cited as Tennessee Williams' masterpiece, The Glass Menagerie, for six performances in early November.

The beautiful, lyrical and heart-stirring but also very funny script explores the universal and timeless landscape of love and longing, and, as Williams describes it, "the long-delayed but always awaited something that we live for." The set is a haunting representation of how the filter of memory creates a mere sketch of a time and place; the incidental music, by Jonathan Posthuma, was a National Finalist in Sound Design at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in 2012.

The cast of local talents includes Noah Carmel, Janis Costa-Deedy, Scott Gardner, Molly McDowell and Joseph Solari-Howard. The show is directed by Wendy Almeida, who has been active in local theater for over twenty-five years.

Performances are November 1, 2, 8 and 9 at 7 pm and matinees November 3 and 10 at 2 pm at 1459 Main Street in Dublin. Admission is $18 (cash only).
