Newfound Science Pub | Embracing the Dark: Reducing Artificial Light of Night

Newfound Science Pub | Embracing the Dark: Reducing Artificial Light of Night

Dinner and drinks available from 5pm. Program begins at 6pm.

Artificial light at night doesn’t just wash out the stars—it disrupts the rhythms of life itself. For millions of years, evolution unfolded under a steady cycle of day and night. But in just over a century, the invention of the lightbulb has transformed our landscapes, flooding the darkness with constant illumination. What does this shift mean for human health, wildlife, and entire ecosystems? And how can smarter lighting choices help us balance safety, beauty, and ecological well-being?

Join us for an evening with Professor Rachelle Lyons as we explore the value of dark skies and the challenges posed by artificial light. Learn how light pollution reshapes nighttime experiences, for people and wildlife alike, and discover practical steps we can take to reduce its impact.

About Rachelle Lyons, Ed.D.:
Rachelle is an associate professor at Plymouth State University, where she focuses on sustainability, natural resource stewardship, and environmental justice. Her research and community work have addressed issues ranging from food accessibility and vernal pool conservation to light pollution and community resilience.
