The Common Core Comes To Concord

New Hampshire lawmakers are going to learn more about the Common Core State Standards Tuesday. A forum on the education reform comes as the educational standards have increasingly become a flash point for local education activists.

Lawmakers will hear about the standards from nationally recognized experts, as well as educators from local New Hampshire schools. “Our hope in planning this is that legislators will finish the day with enough facts and information to articulate to their constituents information about the common Core state Standards,” said Democrat Mary Stuart Gile, chair of the House Education Committee, adding, “whether or not they approve of them or disapprove of them.”

State level officials increasingly say local school districts can opt to modify the standards as they see fit. The Common Core has faced push back in a few communities, and conservative lawmakers have filed a number of bills seeking to delay or stop their implementation in New Hampshire.
