Dreadnaught live at The Music Hall Lounge

Dreadnaught live at The Music Hall Lounge

Dreadnaught’s eclectic blend of rock, jazz, and experimental music has been a hallmark of the seacoast scene for nearly 30 years – 18 of them as house band for The Music Hall’s Writers on a New England Stage series.

Founded in 1996, Dreadnaught is a collective of seasoned musicians featuring Justin Walton on guitar, Bob Lord on the bass and Rick Habib on the drum kit. “Imagine Phish after each member of the band downed seven Red Bulls. Or, King Crimson, but more intense. Or, Dream Theater, though with more fusion and jazz. Then, add them all together, hit turbo, and you might come close to the beauty that is Dreadnaught, but probably not.” (Progarchy)

In their own words, “…in 2017 I think we blew a gasket or something because we released the album Hard Chargin’, which led Relix to call us “the country’s best ‘pure’ prog-rock combo.”

The band’s live performances are nothing short of electrifying. The Progressive Aspect says, “”It’s another instrumental tour de force that is distinctly Dreadnaught right from the off… As with much of Dreadnaught’s work, this is an album that grows in stature as you listen, and repeated visits pay healthy dividends. The joy that the band imbue into everything they do, and their dexterity in delivering it, is guaranteed to spread a smile across even the most careworn visage. I always look forward to a new Dreadnaught release, and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint.”

Dreadnaught’s discography is a testament to their commitment to pushing musical boundaries over time. From their first self-released LP DREADNAUGHT (1998), to their latest LP, Northern Burner (2021), the band continues to evolve and refine their sound. “Dreadnought’s seemingly endless talents and eccentricities have not only stood the test of time, but continue to grow.” (The Sound) Hardcore rock and prog-rock enthusiasts will find a home with Dreadnoughts distinctive sound. Albums Under The Radar notes, “Dreadnaught comes out fighting with fuzz bass, heavy guitar, and roaring rhythms. I haven’t heard this kind of fury since the glory days of Nucleus era Anekdoten.”
