It take up more time in our lives than almost any other activity, yet science still knows very little about sleep or how it affects us. Author David Randall calls sleep 'the dirty little secret of science".  "Despite the fact that every animal does it" says Randall, "scientists still don't know why, exactly, we need sleep in the first place".  But as we try to understand this science, our patterns are changing.  24 hours television, 24 hour stores and restaurants, light and noise pollution and consistent internet use are changing the ways we snooze and how we understand the science of sleep.
