At Sturm Ruger’s annual shareholder meeting in New London, N.H., Wednesday, the gun manufacturer defended its business model and rejected a push to unseat two board members.

Police in New Hampshire say a man accused of firing a shot from his gun that injured a 2-year-old girl in an upstairs apartment told an officer he thought someone was in his bedroom.

Police arrested 51-year-old Timothy Hale in Newport on charges of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and second-degree assault. He faced arraignment Monday; it wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer.

The girl was in stable condition at a hospital.

Newport Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl early Monday morning.

Police Chief Jim Burroughs said it appears the girl left the house, wearing only pajamas, and became trapped outside.

Neighbors heard cries around 4 a.m., but couldn't see anything outside in the dark, he said. Temperatures fell below zero overnight.

Emergency responders were called to the area shortly after 7 a.m. They found the girl dead at the scene.

Chief Burroughs said the family recently moved to the house from outside the area.

For the past few years, the town of Newport has rejected increases to teacher salaries.

These are known as "step increases." They're based on the number of years worked, and add about an extra $1,200 each year to a teacher's salary.

Lisa Ferrigno is the co-president of the Newport Teacher's Association. She says the lack of salary increases means more teachers are leaving.

"We're losing teachers who have been here five, 10, 15 years because of the off-step problem,” Ferrigno said.

Voters in Newport approved a major solar deal Tuesday.

The project will go up for one final vote in May, but town officials are hoping to begin construction this summer.

Under the plan, solar arrays would power all the town’s municipal and school buildings, making them net zero.

It’s a collaboration between Newport and Norwich solar technologies.  The company will cover construction and maintenance costs in exchange for the ability to benefit from federal tax credits.

The Town of Newport is looking to join a growing list of New Hampshire communities turning to solar energy to power local municipal buildings.

Voters will decide at their town meeting in March whether to approve a deal with Norwich Solar Technologies. Under the agreement, the company would cover all research, development, construction and maintenance costs in exchange for the ability to benefit from federal tax credits, said Newport Town Manager Hunter Rieseberg.

Officials in Newport, New Hampshire, say they need to focus on their own residents first when it comes to ambulance service.

The Valley News reports that starting June 30, Newport will no longer provide backup ambulance service to Lempster, New London, Newbury, Springfield, Grantham and half of Sunapee. It will continue to provide service to other towns that have contracts with Newport Ambulance, and mutual aid agreements will not be affected.
