Authorities say a 78-year-old man suffered a medical emergency and died while hiking along New Hampshire's Mount Monadnock on Memorial Day.

Lt. William Boudreau of the state Fish and Game Department said the man, who was from Massachusetts, and two companions were on a trail in Jaffrey. They were just below the summit of Mount Monadnock when the man became unresponsive about 9:15 a.m. Monday.

After several years of abundant natural foods, such as acorns, berries or apples, bears in New Hampshire are emerging  from dens this spring skinny, hungry, and forced to forage farther afield for food. We look at the impact of the recent scarcity of food, and the likelihood that it might increase human-bear interactions. Bear rehabilitator Ben Kilham of the Kilham Bear Center in Lyme, N.H., says he has taken in over 70 orphaned cubs, an unprecedented number. And we discuss the incredible journey of Mink, the troublesome "Hanover Bear" who was relocated to the North Country, but has been tracked travelling south.

The state is working to reduce water pollution from its largest fish hatchery, in the Lakes Region, while planning for long-term upgrades.

This week, New Hampshire Fish and Game will move 50,000 salmon from its Powder Mill Hatchery to a federal hatchery in Nashua.

The move has been in the works since late last year but was delayed due to the partial government shutdown.

And the bear-human conflicts continues this fall, with Fish & Game making the decision to shoot two bear cubs in Manchester.

Legislators want to talk to federal officials about paying for hiker rescues in the White Mountain National Forest.

But the head of the state Department of Fish & Game isn't optimistic that will solve his agency’s money problems.

Fish & Game executive director Glenn Normandeau says half of the state's search-and-rescue operations are for hikers -- largely in the White Mountains.

 

Divers from the New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game have recovered the body of a 47-year-old man reported missing in Country Pond in Kingston.

Police and the New Hampshire Marine Patrol were called at about 5:20 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report that an adult male had attempted to swim about 150 yards from the mainland to a nearby island, but failed to arrive.

Rescue personnel conducted an extensive search Saturday until they were forced to suspend operations at dark.

Anglers are advised not to eat fish from part of the Souhegan River in Milford.

The Environmental Protection Agency wants people to throw back any fish they catch on a roughly one-mile stretch of river near downtown.
