U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is calling for an investigation into the U.S. Olympic Committee and the U.S. Gymnastics program regarding sexual abuse.
In a letter to the Senate Majority Leader, Shaheen referred to former American gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar who was sentenced this week to 175 years for assaulting dozens of girls over the course of four decades.
Shaheen said questions remain about Nassar's case and that these organizations need to answer for it.
“The USOC is a federally chartered institution and its athletes compete under the American flag, so the Senate has a clear responsibility to expand this investigation beyond the narrow criminal charges adjudicated in Michigan," Shaheen said, adding that these two bodies should be required to produce relevant documents and internal communications.
She is asking that a special Senate committee be formed before the Winter Olympics begin next month.
